Ingredients

For the Beef
  • 1 lb Beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
For the Gravy
  • 1 medium Onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 4 cups Beef broth
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp cold water
For Serving
  • 4 slices Bread, toasted
  • 1/2 cup Frozen peas

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Toss beef with flour, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown beef on all sides. Remove beef from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  5. Return beef to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes, or until beef is tender.
  6. Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook, stirring, until the gravy thickens, about 2 minutes.
  7. Stir in frozen peas and cook until heated through, about 3 minutes.
  8. Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  9. Serve the beef mixture over toasted bread.

Notes

You can add other vegetables like carrots or potatoes to the stew for a more complete meal.
